Abstract

The vertical moving of alveolar segment, using an intraoral distractor device was described by Chin and Toht in 1996 became an alternative to bone grafts and guided bone regeneration in the congenital or adquired alveolar bone defects correction. We have reviewed the studies related to the alveolar bone distraction published in the last 5-years in medical magazines indexed in Medline and dental spanish magazines. We considered the experimental, histomorphometric and clinical studies, analizing the distractor location, latency, speed and duration of distraction, bone consolidation period, disadvantages, complications and failures.
