Abstract
For centuries an inseparable part of the organization of rural life in Galicia and northern Portugal, the commonlands (Montes Veciñais en Man Común and Baldíos, respectively) played a very important role that continues today. However, as the rural world where they belong, are facing a series of threats and challenges. The aim of this paper is precisely to establish a comparison between the situations in Galicia and northern Portugal, analyzing the main determinants of the existence of these areas, mainly historical factors. To this end, we analyzed two cases one in Galicia and other northern Portugal, and it has concluded the existence of significant differences and similarities between both. Finally, we have identified their limitations and opportunities.
