Abstract
In contrast with the usual generalizations, this paper reviews the concept and exempla of patronage from the moral perspective of those who believe that the activity of intellectuals and artists must be rewarded, protected or promoted as an inescapable consequence of a fortunate position. Th is is done through the unfairly neglected cases of Aurelius Symmachus, Charlemagne, Alfred the Great, Étienne du Perche, Benedict xiii, Ludwig ii von Ysenburg and fi nally, Fernando ii of León, to suggest a broader approach to patronage and munifi cence as a matter of moral responsibility
