Abstract

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the most frequent cancer in Spain. The incidence varies in the different geographical areas. Objective: Knowing CRC impact and main epidemiological factors in the Hospital do Salnés area. Methods: All CRC incident cases diagnosed in the Hospital do Salnés between January 2001 and December 2005 have been prospectively analyzed. All cases are histologically confirmed. Patient gender and age, as well as CRC location have been stated. Results: 129 CRC cases were diagnosed in the research period. The gross incidence rate was 35.5 cases per 100,000 people and year. Male: female incidence ratio was 1.6 for colon cancer and 2.03 for rectal cancer. Main age at diagnose was 72 years. Discussion: CRC incidence in the Salnés county is higher in men than in women. Colon cancer incidence in the county seems to be below the Spanish mean.
