Abstract

By means of a contrastive research, this paper studies comparative idioms in German and Spanish, on the basis of an extensive corpus extracted from different monolingual dictionaries. Firstly, we distinguish comparative idioms as a special type of structure in accordance with construction grammar, standing out both its iconic value and its intensifying meaning. In the following sections we present different definitions for comparison in contrast to metaphor, since we study the semantic relationships between the "tertium comparationis" (relational element) and the "comparatum" (prototype). Finally, we come to the conclusion that creation of comparative idioms agrees with similar semantic-structural patterns in both German and Spanish.
