Abstract
The teaching of Italian as a foreign language to Galician students should take advantage of the cultural and typological proximity between these two languages to facilitate the learning of the phraseological units at the beginner level. In the teaching of Italian as a foreign language a great importance is given to contrastive linguistics and, particularly, to contrastive lexicology. Contrastive approaches are considered a fundamental resource and they become indispensable when there is a great similarity between two languages as in the case of Italian and Galician. Therefore, we think it necessary to include a receptive knowledge of a good number of phraseological units in the students� initial training in Italian as a foreign language. These units form part of the linguistic competence the students have of two similar languages.
