Resumen

A serological survey to gain more knowledge about bovine fasciolosis in Salto Department (Uruguay) by using an ELISA and excretory/secretory antigens was conducted. Blood samples were collected from 386 cattle from beef, dairy and/or mixed farms. Data obtained were analyzed regarding intrinsic (age, breed and gender) and extrinsic factors (aptitude). The relationship among these variables and the results was demonstrated by the estimation of odds ratio (OR) and prevalence ratio (PR) values. The cases were classified according the CHAID (Chi Squared Automatic Interaction Detection) test. An overall individual seroprevalence of 67% (IC95% 62, 72) was obtained, and the highest percentages in Angus cattle and younger than 2 yr were observed. Breed resulted the most influent factor, and then the age.Ninety-two percent (CI 95% 78, 100) of the bovine herds had ruminants positive to the ELISA.It was concluded that fasciolosis is a very important problem in the bovine farms from Uruguay, which underlines the need for the application of measures against the intermediate and definitive hosts to reduce its appearance
