Abstract
Nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas are benign tumors of the anterior pituitary, which are characterized by the absence of signs or symptoms produced by hormone hypersecretion. Depending on the size they are classified as macroadenomas (> 1 cm) or microadenomas. They are usually benign lesions, whose clinic is primarily due to mass effect and hypopituitarism, but it depends on location and growth. Diagnosis is based on imaging techniques, mainly magnetic resonance with gadolinium. It is also necessary to evaluate pituitary hormonal function and the visual field. The main treatment for these tumors is surgery, although it may be necessary to use other techniques such as radiotherapy or radiosurgery. In some cases, especially in asymptomatic patients with microadenomas, the best option is a regular monitoring.
