Abstract
The use of proverbs from the gnomic tradition, of either cultivated or popular origin, is intrinsic to medieval didactic thought. Two chief works from the cuaderna vía, the Libro de Alexandre and the Libro de Buen Amor, both use this rhetorical strategy, that when seen from a dialectical perspective as well, is based on the argument of authority. In this work, the collation of the techniques used by the anonymous author of the Alexandre and Juan Ruiz in their treatment and adaptation of sententiae shows analogous approaches, along with subtle differences at the basi s of which is found the concept of literary authorship.
