Abstract

Sacred or deified mountains can be found in Indian traditions (for example, the Vedic myth in which Indra cuts off the wings of the mountains), and in pre IndoEuropean (Hattic) Anatolia, with its invocation of the mountains in rituals of royal consecration. The Luvian hieroglyph which stands for Godmountain, could have originated in the ancient preIndoEuropean graphic symbol for sacred royalty.
