Abstract

The study of innovation in the service sector has generated a growing literature that highlights its specificities in comparison to the innovation in manufactures. In this article we strive to delimit the scope of these specificities while we examine the heterogeneity of innovation among different branches of the service sector. This paper discusses critically the recent literature in this field and performs an empirical study on the Spanish experience based on available statistical information (Community Innovation Survey-CIS5 and Technological Innovation Panel-PITEC). The results seem to show that there are not so many differences between manufactures and services, if we take the sector average into account. On the other hand, remarkable dissimilarities are found between branches - in this case focusing on the service sector - because of their different structural characteristics.
