Resumo
At the same time as violent conflicts were breaking out between lords and peasants in the late Middle Ages, another kind of exchanges took place as well through various legal procedures. On the basis of published and unpublished sources from Galician ecclesiastical lordships, this paper attempts to show how the power accumulated by the lords and the huge inequalities existing between the litigant parties generated such probatory deeds of seigneurial rights as in most cases were able to legally deprive peasants of their customary rights. But the very fact that these legal exchanges did exist also shows the peasants' dynamic thrust and ultimately acknowledges their essential role in feudal society.
