Abstract

We study the effects of industrial pollution (originating from a pulp mili) on the benthic vegetation of the coast of Galicia (N.W. Iberian Peninsula). Communities of Fucus vesiculosus L. and Fucus spiralis L. were studied in two áreas: one cióse to the waste outlet of a pulp mili in the ría of Pontevedra, the other in an unpolluted área of the ría of Muros-Noia. The F. vesiculosus community was the most severely affected, with a clear increase in chlorophytes and cyanophytes. In addition, both the incidence of epiphytism and species richness were higher in the polluted área.
