Abstract
This paper deals with a revision of the phytosociological status of the beech forests of the western part of the Cantabrian Range (NW Iberian Peninsula) using multivariate methods. For this purpose we apply a NMDS analysis to a dataset containing floristic data derived from 47 inventory plots. The ordination obtained shows that floristic composition is mainly related to pH in water of the A horizon and altitude. These results enable us to organize the following two associations of beech forests in the study area: acidophilous beech forests growing on strongly acidic siliceous soils (ass. Omphalodo nitidae-Fagetum sylvaticae) and neutro-basophilous... (Leer más) beech forests growing on low acidic to neutral limestone soils included in the new association Neottio nidi-avis-Fagetum sylvaticae. In each case, floristic variability, sucessional aspects and syntaxonomical status are discussed.
