Abstract
We studied pollinator behaviour in different-sized patches of Echium plantagineum (Boraginaceae). The pollinators displaying greatest activity were Hemaris fuciformis (Sphingidae) (46 flowers per minute, fpm), Bombus terrestris (Apidae) (23 fpm) and Apis mellifera (Apidae) (15 fpm). On average, the flowers of plants in large patches were visited once every 9 min, the flowers of plants in small patches once every 18 min, and the flower of isolated plants once every 30 min. These results indícate that pollinator activity in Echium plantagineum is dependent on patch size.
