Abstract

A review of the major theories explaining the causes of political violence is undertaken. First, we reflect on the definition of this phenomenon and its main attributes and characteristics. Next, we elaborate and explain a typology about different expressions of violent actions guided by political motivation. Finally, the paper is dedicated to reviewing the most important theoretical approaches adopted by research conducted over the past few decades on the origins of insurgent political violence, specifying the psychological assumptions underlying these approaches. There are two classic approaches to political violence: 1) As a heated reaction to frustrating sociopolitical conditions; 2) As a pattern of political action based on strategic and rational thought. Throughout our analysis, we suggest the need to complement the latter two approaches with a third analytical perspective focusing on symbolic, ideological and cultural factors associated with political violence
