Resumo

We report the demographic and aetiological characteristics of a series of 112 consecutive jaw fracture patients treated in the Maxillofacial Surgery Service of the Galician General Hospital (Santiago de Compostela, Spain) between August 1993 and January 1995. the most frequent causes of jaw fracture were road accidents (57 cases, 51%), followed by miscellaneous events and aggression. The ratio of males to females in the sample was 4.6:1. Patient age ranged from 1 to 82 years, but in both sexes the second and third decades accounted for most cases respectively 35 (31,25%) and 28 (25,00%) of the total. The frequency-age data were fitted by the equation which is compared with the results of other authors and is used to predict the incidence of jaw fracture in the year 2006 on the basis of the foreseeable demographic structure at that time.
