Abstract

Castilian prosifications (TI, 1. fols. ó^-SS") of Alfonso X's cantigas are sometimes considerably different fi-om their Galician original versión. The translator was much more than a mere translator, as he did not only adapt Galician verse into Castilian prose, but would also adom the text with magnificent amplificationes which enrich the story. The sources of the new data are diñicuh to determine, but it seems likely that the prosificator has taken into account the miniatures accompanying the Galician text when he undertook the prose translation, and so his text was enlarged by the interpretation of what is shown in the miniatures. It is then a clear case of translation in the medieval sense of the term, according to which the translator is, above all, a reader who interprets and who adapts the contents of the story to an audience different from that which could read or listen to the original versión. For this purpose he does not hesitate to use a versión of the same story in a iconographic form which had been ruled by a different code in its making.
