Abstract
The traditional conception on the causes of violence and violent conflicts corresponds to an explanation paradigm, that we may name psychobiological. However, from the point of view of promoting a peace culture this paradigm is clearly inappropriate for a variety of reasons. The paper describes and upholds the transition from this first concept of violence to a second paradigm that stresses the socio-cultural mediated nature of human violence. Furthermore, we enumerate the main assumptions and arguments that support this socio-cultural approach from different social sciences together with existing obstacles in the design of a peace and human rights culture
