Abstract
This paper attempts to verify the hypothesis of a modular processing in the preattentive stage, following the FIT. In a first experiment we ran three conditions: 1) Three elements in the target set defined by features belonging to different dimensions (size, slope and curvature); 2a) Two targets defined by different features from the same dimension (the biggest and the smallest element); 2b) Three different targets defined by the same feature (curvature). In each one of these conditions the display were homogeneous and the elements were randomly dispersed in the presentation area. The results showed that the subjects were able to access simultaneously to the whole set of targets. In experiment 2, the previous conditions 1 and 2b were used, but the display elements appeared, in this case, in a matrix organization. The results, as in experiment 1, showed that the target set was accessed simultaneously. The negative trials were faster than the positive ones in this case.
