Abstract

The idea that a single notion underlies the various uses given to the term 'model' in mathematical and empirical sciences (first put forward by Patrick Suppes some 30 years ago) seems not to have been taken seriously except by those wishing to refute it. In this article I argue that the idea is tenable, and that, as Suppes suggested, the single notion in question corresponds to the use given to 'model' in formal semantics. The required condition for this to be so is that formal semantic models must be considered from a representational point of view and not from the interpretational point of view maintained by Suppes.
