Abstract

Since it was proposed in 2005 by J. Hirsch (University of California, USA), the h]index was consolidated as a system for measuring quality of scientific diffusion which acts as an indicator of productivity and as impact evaluator. Its particularity is that it is the digit that quantitatively compares the publications of a magazine or author and appointments that they have obtained, i.e., is represented by the number h of publications that have received a number h of citations. This paper discusses the impact of the index h in the area of communication from two different perspectives. On one hand, we analyze comparatively their particularities in ISI, Scopus and Google Scholar Metrics as a tool to compile the scientific and to know their levels of impact. Moreover, it explores the impact h]index of Google Scholar Metrics. Drawing on input from EC3 research group at the University of Granada, we review the impact of selfassessment system that Google launched magazines in April (and revised in November), 2012. Furthermore, through the analysis of more than 1.200 links to articles published in Revista Latina de Comunicacion Social, assesses strengths and weaknesses of Google Scholar Metrics visibility strategies, positioning and dissemination of scientific texts using personal profiles that researchers and journals may info to create index h to systematize scientific production.
