Abstract

The intention of this thesis is to get an in-depth knowledge of shipyards’ competitiveness and to go beyond the three conventional competitiveness factors (price, delivery time and quality). It is offered a complete list of competitiveness factors which, besides of being relevant for competitiveness, are useful for those people who are in charge of a shipyard, in order to help them to detect where they could improve their competitiveness. Firstly, this document focuses on defining the main concepts of the research: competitiveness, competitive strategy, factor of competitiveness, and each of the thirty-two factors of competitiveness that have been identified during the literature review as relevant factors for the competitiveness of shipyards. After that part, an analysis model was elaborated in order to answer three questions about the case study (Navantia, SA1 in the Ferrol estuary): 1) Which are the most relevant competitiveness factors? 2) Which is the development degree of those competitiveness factors on which the enterprise has direct influence? 3) Is the shipyard competitive? The analysis model is based on a theoretical framework and on a methodology that would allow to study other shipyards using the same model applied in the case study of this research.
