Abstract

This PhD. Thesis describes a procedure (system) for low pressure water mist generation, analyzing its performance when used for fire suppression. To achieve this goal, a detailed study on the state of the art has been developed in a first stage to specify some aspects of the system design. And also, position this water mist generation process in its environment, according to technical criteria and other existing solutions in fire safety engineering. In a second stage, a dynamic and energetic analysis of the water behavior throughout the process has been carried out. Finally, using computer simulation tools, a CFD analysis was developed to compare the performance of the system against a fire, with the behavior of two other extinction systems commercially available: automatic sprinklers, and high pressure water mist systems. After analysis and discussion of all the data and results gathered, it can be concluded that the proposed system is feasible, and therefore for simulated fire scenarios the cooling obtained (and so extinction) results similar to the other fire extinction systems studied
