Abstract

Same-sex attraction relationships in the works of the Galician troubadours This PhD thesis discusses with on the presence of sexual relations and intense affection between men or women in medieval poetry in Galician-Portuguese. It opens with the historical and literary background of the Galician troubadour phenomenon as a satirical genre, paying special attention to equivocatio, studying the emergence of the notion of sodomy as a turning point in the history of sexuality and affections. This framework lays the basis for a review of same-sex relationships between men and women in medieval literature. A corpus of 87 cantigas (whose instrumental edition is included as an appendix) was selected, analysing all of the homosexual signifiers found, both those verified in these texts and those deemed as such by the philological and literary critics. After studying several probable cases of love poems between two men or two women, the author examines and catalogues the rich set of invective items appeared in intermale and interfemale repertory, not only from a linguistic and literary perspective, but also an historical and anthropological point of view, referring to legal texts, other kind of poems, etc.
