Abstract

Silos are widely used by all kind of industries to store different agricultural products, e.g. grains, tillage or sugar. Despite their use has been generalized since the ends of XIX century, some uncertainties still persist about their structural behaviour. One of the most important aspects in silo design is the interaction between the bulk material and the silo wall. Some complex phenomena appear when those so different materials get into contact, which cause some of the main problems that still arise in silo design. Janssen (1895) was one of the first researchers in silo behaviour, and his works are still partially used nowadays for static condition. However, the experimental research accomplished in the mid of XX century showed that Janssen¿s theory did not provide a satisfactory explanation for many phenomena detected during silo emptying. Thus, greater pressures than those predicted by Janssen were reported, as well as other effects. The use of numerical methods, specially the Finite Element Method, for the analysis of silo problems provided a great impulse since the late seventies. The improvement of computer resources and the optimization of numerical tools have helped to get a better knowledge about silos. Nevertheless, there is a lack of information about some parameters of numerical models yet. Hence, it has been analysed in this thesis the influence of some parameters required to develop a numerical model. These parameters have been focused on the model used to reproduce the interaction between the bulk solid and the silo wall. Thus, it has been reported that the algorithm method used to solve the contact or the contact stiffness factor may affect the pressures exerted over the silo wall. The behaviour of the granular materials stored in silos is very complex, and there is not any mathematical model that can reproduce completely their behaviour. The influence of two very different formulations, elastoplastic and hypoplastic, was analysed in this thesis by comparing the results obtained in silos of the same geometry. Numerical simulations show similar results for static analyses, while several differences appear for the discharge simulations. Recent studies by different researchers, which have been included in Eurocode, show that filling eccentricity can induce the existence of overpressures on silo walls. In consequence, it has been developed a numerical model to study both the filling and emptying eccentricities. Finally, it is important to check the suitability of numerical models. So, several experimental tests were conducted to compare their results with those obtained with numerical models.
