Abstract

The queen is a key person or figure in the religious politics of the kingdom, as well as her spiritual patronage as her symbolic relevance for the monarchy. The queen should participate in the reception of the pilgrims’ retinues arriving at St James of Compostela, but she is also relevant to travel to Compostela. Royal women could go on pilgrimage for a devotional purpose, but also for dynastic or politic needs. Concretely, Queen María of Castile (r. 1416-1458) shows herself as benefactor of pilgrims and demonstrates how the dialogue among Iberian courts about receiving them and rewarding them is stimulated.
