Abstract

The use of the Internet by youth has become a matter of debate in various fields of knowledge, gaining special relevance in the educational context, especially for the social emergency caused by COVID-19. The objective of this research has been to analyze the use of the Internet by adolescents in the fourth year of secondary education, distinguishing between leisure-oriented employment and use in school tasks. A non-experimental ex post facto quantitative methodology is used through a questionnaire (N = 1144). The results show that adolescents make a more intensive use of the Internet for the development of leisure activities compared to school tasks, highlighting the use of social networks. Regarding leisure, differences have been found based on academic performance, and in the development of school tasks according to sex. Finally, the need to design specific training actions, both from school and from the family, is discussed that contribute to a more informed and appropriate use of the Internet that allows taking advantage of the possibilities offered by the Internet for learning and integral development of youth in the digital age.
