Zusammenfassung

Professional women living in some rural areas of Spain are contributing to the consolidation of new dynamics of spatial mobility and to the creation of new perceptions of rurality. Within the new paradigm of mobility and aware to the social value attributed to the fact to move, the paper raises the relationship between mobility and gender from the lived experience of women living in rural areas. Specifically, it investigates the mobility patterns of women, their reasons for movement in their daily lives, but particularly their perception of mobility. From a gender standpoint, we try to demonstrate that local gender relations affect the daily life mobility of women as well as to think about how different models of inequality led to specific (im)mobilities. The research has been conducted through in-depth interviews to sixty professional women in rural areas of Catalonia and Galicia. The results show that everyday mobility of women is an important source of empowerment, an essential form of rootedness in rural areas and a necessary condition to settle down. However, women experience imposed mobilities that are included in their experience of mobility and rurality.
