Resumo

It has made an inventory of the stands of the most abundant species of genus Quercus, in general, in the northwest of Iberian Peninsula, and particularly, in Galicia (Quercus robur L.). Subsequently, we have calculated the essential parameters of the wood, using samples of different trees which have been felled within the inventoried stands, which will assess the suitability of oak wood for the manufacture of barrels, allowing even propose in advance, the need or not, to carry out, the relevant silvicultural treatments to achieve our goal. The studied specie has an average grain, with similar values to oaks of the French region of Vosgos. Regarding to the infra-density, emphasize that their mean values are slightly higher than those obtained in Northern Portugal and, finally, in relation with the porosity, it has less than French oaks used in cooperage.
